Abstract

Interpersonal metafunction is the language function which deals with how language is operated to set up the relation between discourse producers and audience. This function is commonly used by a speaker to express their judgment towards the things being uttered. Therefore, it is not surprising if the prior studies mainly analyzed spoken discourse. Seeing that the studies of interpersonal metafunction on written discourse are still limited compared to the spoken one, the current study tries to explore how news articles’ writers take roles to build and maintain a relationship, create distance with the readers, and express their attitude regarding the issues of Xinjiang re-education camps by analyzing the interpersonal metafunction impregnated within the selected news. Three systems, namely mood, modality, and personal pronoun, were analyzed to meet the purpose of the study. Firstly, the mood system was examined using Eggins’ (2004) framework of typical mood types realization of speech functions. Secondly, Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) system network of modality was utilized to find the type, orientation, and value of the employed modality system. Lastly, the personal system was studied under Whitelaw et al.’s reference items. The findings showed that different news articles had a different tendency in realizing the three systems of analysis. However, they also exhibit common results: 1) declarative became the dominantly used mood type in every news article, 2) probability type, implicit objective orientation, and low level of modality were realized the most, and 3) interactant reference items were widely used in every news article. It can be concluded that the realization of interpersonal metafunction was different in every news article depending on the writers’ attitude toward the presented things.
