Abstract

Critical thinking has become one of the top requested skills for job seekers. Therefore, schools or other educational institutions should facilitate students to enhance this skill. In the English language teaching, one way to enhance students‟ critical thinking is by providing adequate learning sources in particular textbooks. This research investigates how the levels of SOLO taxonomy represented in the English textbook and Module and which level of SOLO taxonomy is the most dominant. The researcher analyzed the English Textbook and English Module used by SMAN 1 Sumber, Rembang, in 2019/2020. The questions consist of general questions in form of multiple-choice questions and reading comprehension questions (essay questions). The method used is a descriptive qualitative study with content analysis. The first result from reading comprehension (essay questions) of English textbook showed that the uni-structural level has a significant portion than other levels with 88 questions (68%). The following is the relational level with 24 questions (19%) and multistructural level with 17 questions (13%). The second result, general questions (multiple-choice questions) of English Module in which the uni-structural level gets 61 questions (73%), multistructural 16 questions (19%), relational level 3 questions (7%). Third, the reading comprehension questions (essay question) of the English module showed that uni-structural level with 39 questions got percentage of 87%. The next followed by multistructual level with 4 questions (9%) and relational level with 2 questions (4%). Moreover, the is null distribution of extended abstract both in English textbook and Module. It can be concluded in English Textbook and English Module, mostly at uni-structural level with the percentage more than 50%, and it means that they have a low critical thinking level.
