Abstract

The Pronunciation skill is essential in learning English as second language. Wrong pronunciation leads to wrong interpretation and ends with miscommunication. In the process of learning English, interference from students’ mother tongue happened in form of positive transfer which helped students and negative transfer which gave burden to them. Banyumese Dialect sounds [b, d, g] have the same pronunciation as English voiced sounds in the final position. It means, Banyumese Dialect speakers have advantage to master the sound in English better. However, they still find difficulty in pronouncing them. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the students’ ability in pronouncing English voiced plosive sounds in final position and (2) to find out the factors causing students’ errors in pronouncing English voiced plosive sounds in final position. A qualitative method was employed in this study. There were thirty Banyumese Dialect speakers as the participants of this study. They were from the seventh and ninth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang. Two instruments were used in this study; the pronunciation test and interview questions. The findings showed that students’ ability in pronouncing English voiced plosive sounds [b] was good with 71 % correct pronunciations or 106 words, and sound [g] was also good with 65 % correct pronunciations or 98 words. Meanwhile, students’ ability in pronouncing sound [d] was categorized Excellent with 83 % correct pronunciation or 125 words. It was concluded that students’ mastery in pronouncing English voiced plosive sounds in final position was good. Furthermore, factors causing students’ error were the similarity of the sounds, mother tongue interference, and students’ unawareness.
