Abstract

This paper point the study of researching the teachers’ perceptions, strategies, and obstacles they face in using the textbook in the field of junior high school EFL classrooms. The problem of this research was: 1) what are teachers’ perceptions towards the use of English textbooks in EFL classrooms? 2) what are teachers’ strategies in using or applying English textbooks in EFL classrooms? 3) what are teachers’ obstacles in selecting and applying English textbooks in EFL classrooms? This study was established with eight English teachers of several junior high schools in Kendal, Jawa Tengah. The data were employed from the questionnaire, it was a closed-ended questionnaire and an open-ended questionnaire. The findings show that the teachers perceived English textbooks positively, they believe that the textbook helps both teacher and student in the learning process. Meanwhile, in applying and choosing a textbook, they have their strategies depended on some factors, like curriculum, syllabus, students’ needs, motivation, and abilities. They also use another resource to overcome the weakness of the textbook, therefore the learning process would get efficient. There are some problems that the eight teachers found in applying textbooks: students’ motivation; students’ skill; time allocation; and school facility.
