Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relevance between the written (reading and writing) questions in the textbook “Pathway to English” as an English supplementary course for the tenth grade of Senior High School with the syllabus of the 2013 Curriculum in terms of text forming aspect: social function, text structure, and linguistic features. This study used descriptive qualitative content analysis as its research methodology. In this study, the written (reading and writing) questions material in the textbook is classified based on chapters and the syllabus in terms of text forming aspects. The data are taken from the student book and entered into the checklist table to make the comparison between the materials on the textbook, and which required in the 2013 curriculum English lesson for the supplementary course syllabus for the tenth grade of Senior High School. Next, the researcher analyzed and evaluated the questions in each task according to its relevance with text forming aspects. The finding of this study showed that in terms of the relevance with the social function aspect, that found 8 relevant chapters, 1 was partly relevant, and 1 chapter was irrelevant. In terms text structure aspect, there were 9 chapters provided the text structure aspect based on the syllabus. The result showed there was 2 relevant chapter, no chapters included in the partly relevant, and there were 7 chapters belong in the textbook was irrelevant. While, in the relevancy of the written questions with the linguistic features aspect, there was 3 relevant chapter, no chapter in the book which was partly relevant, and there were 7 chapters in the textbook which were irrelevant. According to the research findings, the researcher suggested the book writer develop and improve the materials in this book. For the book users, they should use another English source of materials to complete the task from this book. For the school, they should consider the textbook that is designed based on the syllabus of the 2013 curriculum in terms of text forming aspects: social function, text structure, and linguistic features facilitate student learning. And then, for the other researchers to conduct research related to the textbook analysis in other research terms and they can use this research as their references
