Abstract

This study analyzed the Indonesian student’s problems in pronouncing English short and long vowel sounds. The purpose of this study is to identify how well the English short and long vowel sounds are pronounced by students and to discover the kind of errors that are mostly found in the students’ pronunciation. The subjects of this study were 30 fifth-semester International Class students of English Education Study Program of UNNES in the academic year 2020/2021. The instruments used were the production test containing English short and long vowel sounds and interviews. The results of both instruments were used as the source of the data. The level of criterion by Tinambuan’s criterion (1988) was used to determine the students achievement. Based on the data analysis the total average incorrect number of English short and long vowel sounds in pronunciation made by students was 20% which was categorized as excellent. While the kinds of errors which are mostly found in the students’ pronunciation of English short and long vowel sounds were substitution errors. According to the interviews’ results, the causes of the errors were the students’ confusion about how to distinguish short and long English vowel sounds
