Abstract

Subtitling is needed to make audiovisual media understandable in the target language. Subtitling strategies are necessary to produce natural subtitles. The purpose of this study was to find out the subtitling strategies and the naturalness of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. This study belongs to the content analysis study. The source of data in this study was the subtitles of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. A total of 1355 data in the form of sentences were analyzed using the subtitling strategies classification by Gottlieb (1992). The data were analyzed by 15 Indonesian raters to find out the naturalness of the subtitles using translation naturalness assessment by Nababan and Nuraeni (2012). The findings of the research revealed that out of ten subtitling strategies, only eight strategies were used in the subtitle. Those eight strategies were transfer, paraphrase, deletion, imitation, condensation, expansion, decimation, and transcription. From the result of the naturalness assessment, it can be seen that the total translation naturalness score of natural was 17030 of 20325 data, less natural was 2813 of 20325 data, and unnatural was 482 of 20325 data. From the result of the naturalness test, the researcher concluded that the subtitles of Bohemian Rhapsody movie categorized as natural translation. The study also revealed that each strategy used has different naturalness scores one to another. The subtitling strategy produced the most natural subtitles are decimation and transcription, followed by transfer, imitation, deletion, expansion, condensation, and finally paraphrase.
