Abstract

This thesis employs discourse analysis to investigate cohesive devices and coherence in research articles. The research was based on a purposive random sampling of 10 research articles at the 8th ELTLT Conference 2019. The text analyzed in this thesis includes the abstract, introduction, research methodology, findings and discussions, and conclusion. In the research article of the 8th ELTLT Conference 2019, the writer focused on articles that find out cohesive devices and employ logical relations. The findings indicated that the authors used cohesive devices in the creation of their writing product. The conjunction of addition was the most used cohesive device in the texts with a total 541 out of 1955 clauses. It demonstrated that the authors created a text that contained the additional information without changing the context in the previous clause or sentence. Furthermore, cohesive devices that rarely used are superordinate, with only 5 clauses were discovered. Through the findings, some clauses have a logical relationship in using cohesive devices. Therefore, the relation among cohesive devices to achieve text coherence was the direct involvement of cohesive devices in making text. In fact, there were some placements of cohesive devices in the text improper way. In conclusion, a cohesive device binds text together and bridges the gaps to avoid misleading the context and achieve text coherence. Then, further researchers or students can use cohesive devices as a tool to improve the quality of writing.
