Abstract

This study aims to the economy, social and culture analysis in sports coaching program in the East Nusa Tenggara Province. The NTT Province is known as a relatively arid, barren, tropical area but still holds great potential in sporting achievements. Until now, NTT still has the potential of certain (superior) sports branches to obtained achievement in national, regional and international levels. This qualitative research uses data collection techniques, namely observation and in-depth interviews with key informants and is equipped with documentation. This research collaborated with the Secretary and two members of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia in NTT, three of staff from the Youth and Sports Department of NTT Province, one of race walk athlete, one of boxing athlete, one of kempo athlete, one of boxing trainer, one of kempo trainer and two ex-athletes in the NTT Province. The results of this study concluded that (1) the typical of NTT community who are challenging due to the influence of environmental and social conditions form muscular mental and physical strength and foster a strong fighting spirit which is one of the basic supporting assets in fostering and development of sports in NTT. Their social behavior is not easy to affect with something that comes from inside or outside. That can be used as the basis for determining the individual branch and self-defence is the priority;(2) The cultural richness values and multi-culture in NTT community have the same basic pattern on sports which becomes the basis for determining in fostering and developing sports. There are the traditional game "pikul air", traditional boxing in Ngada Regency, and the caci war dance; (3) Most of the high-achieving athletes in NTT from the lower middle economic class, to improve the standard of living is through sports as well as a form of self-identity and pride for the family; (4) Individual sports and self-defence which are super-priority sports in development and development in NTT are athletics, boxing, taekwondo and kempo. That is because the selection of the sport is also following the social and cultural environment and the character of the people in NTT. Synergy is needed between sports stakeholders and all parties who sit together to formulate the right policies and programs for the government to be able to improve other sports that can become superior in NTT so that they do not only rely on boxing and other sports.
