Abstract

In global community, English as international language is used to ease the communication. Communication also can be implemented through a text. Creating text needs to be understood that it is not only about arranging the words into sentence and paragraph but also delivering meaning. Some elements such as cohesion and coherence become the basic construction in creating text. Unfortunately, not everyone can achieve good skill in writing. This study aims at examining the writing skills of a group of Indonesian non English department graduate students. Special attention has been focused on the cohesion and coherence of their production of final project abstract. Employing a discourse analytical case study, ten texts written by graduate students of Informatic Engineering department at Soegijapranata Catholic university were d. In creating text, cohesion and coherence is inseparable especially in academic writing. Thus, it is an important matter to writing competency of students as they are at graduate level, majoring in Informatic Engineering that should report their final project in English. In this study, a cohesion and coherence theory were used to analyze the the text. Open-ended questionnaire was used to confirm the result of the analysis according to the writers’ point of view. The findings indicate that the students show a bit weakness on achieving cohesion and coherence in creating texts due to lack of knowledge about the theory of cohesion and coherence.
