Abstract

Students are equipped with the knowledge and good oral and written communication skills to support the competition at the global level. Motivation is considered a complex and challenging issue in teaching, especially in second language courses. Many scholars have conducted motivational strategies in teaching the English language; however, research focusing on essay writing is still rare. This current study aims at (1) explaining the students’ perception of motivational strategies in an Essay Writing class; (2) explaining the lecturer’s plan to implement motivational strategies to teach the students in Essay Writing; (3) explaining the implementation of motivational strategies in an Essay Writing class; (4) explaining the appropriateness of the prepared-lesson plan and the teaching practices using motivational strategies to teach Essay Writing class; (5) explaining the students’ writing progress using motivational strategies in an Essay Writing class; (6) proving the impact of perception, plan, and practice of motivational strategies on students’ essay writing skills. This research was a mixed-methods study. It explored the qualitative data followed by quantitative data. A case study was applied to collect qualitative data. Meanwhile, in the quantitative method, an equivalent time-series design was applied. The research was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo –a private university in central Java. The research participants were 27 students enrolled in Essay writing class and 1 Essay writing lecturer. Several instruments were used to get the data. They were questionnaires, observation, interviews, documentation, and test. The data were then analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis and quantitatively using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings answer the six research questions. They are (1) The students' perception of motivational strategies belong to the "good" category seen from the questionnaires and interviews; (2) The lecturer planned the teaching and learning in the form of a lesson plan using motivational strategies; (3) The lecturer practiced teaching using motivational strategies, although some strategies were not implemented for some reasons; (4) The lesson plans were prepared carefully following the format used in Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo and the teaching strategies as adapted from Dornyei were arranged in sequences. In short, the appropriateness of the prepared-lesson plan and the teaching practice was categorized as good. It was between 53-68%; (5) The students showed their writing improvement seen from the improvement of their writing scores; (6) The students’ perception of motivational strategies had a significant impact on their writing skills seen from the result of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000, which was lower than 0.005. In addition, the result of the descriptive and inferential analysis showed the positive and significant impacts of plan and practice of motivational strategies on students’ essay writing skills. To conclude, the alternative hypothesis is accepted that there was a significant impact of the students' perception toward the implementation of motivational strategies on the students' writing skills.
