Abstract

Most English learners have their ability to pronounce English speech sounds properly and may have problems pronouncing the English words. One of the influential factors is the first language (L1) interference. This study was conducted under the consideration that L1 may influence the students’ pronunciation of English speech sounds. It was a case study. It aimed to explore the influence of Pontianak Melayu dialect on students’ pronunciation of English speech sounds both positively and negatively. The problems discussed in this study “what English speech sounds (vowels, diphthongs, consonant, consonant cluster) are influenced by Pontianak Melayu dialect?” and “How the teacher’s roles in the development of the students’ pronunciation?” Considering those problems, the basic objectives of this research are to explain the English speech sounds (vowels, diphthongs, consonant, consonant cluster) that are influenced by Pontianak Melayu dialect and to explain teacher’s roles in the development of the students’ pronunciation. The subject of this study is the students in junior high school which originally from Pontianak. 17 students are originally from Pontianak. The object of this study is English speech sounds pronounced by all the students. The data are in the form of students’ voices in reading an English text twice. Besides, the other supporting data are collected through other instruments. Those are questionnaires, interviews, and observation. This study concluded that Pontianak Melayu dialect gave insignificant positive transfer on English vowel sounds [ɔ:] and vowel sound [ʌ] and diphthong [aɪ]. Pontianak Melayu dialect gave significant negative transfer on English consonant sounds [f,v,k,s] and consonant cluster sound [fr] and [kl]. Besides, the teacher did the correct pronunciation by repetition and using an electronic dictionary in their teaching and learning process.
