Abstract

This study aimed at revealing the relevance of an English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XI” used in vocational high schools to the social semiotic perspective. This study is descriptive qualitative. The object of this study is an English textbook used in vocational high schools. The subjects of this study consist of five groups: 1) mechanical engineering students, 2) English teachers, 3) graduates who are working as engineers, 4) engineering company trainers, and 5) experts. In collecting the data, textbook content analysis was done. Then, open-ended questionnaires were administered. In addition, interviews were also conducted. The data were analyzed by doing: 1) data reduction, 2) data display, and 3) conclusion drawing and verification. They were also triangulated to make sure that the data are reliable. The results of the study reveal that the textbook content and language to a great extent are not relevant to the social semiotic perspective. On the other hand, it is found that the learning steps manifested, the literacy activities, and images displayed in the textbook to a great extent are relevant to the social semiotic perspective. This study might suggest that the content and language provided in English textbooks used in vocational high schools should be in line with the social semiotic perspective.
