Abstract

One of the interactive learning media that has been used in Indonesian education is Augmented-reality-based media. Augmented reality is a technology that allows users to see and interact with 3D virtual objects or information in a real-time environment. However, there are very few studies that examine the advantages and limitations of AR-based media used in Indonesia. Therefore, the main purpose of this research was to examine to advantages and limitations of AR-based media used on students’ learning activities. This research presents a review of the literature on AR-based media used in Indonesian education in comparison to other countries. A total of 30 previous research on AR-based media used published between 2010 and 2019 were analyzed to find out the advantages and limitations, impacts toward students, and the comparison to AR used in other countries. This research belongs to qualitative analyses, thus the data are analyzed descriptively through three steps: data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The research findings showed that the most frequently reported advantages of AR-based media used are the ability to increase learning achievement and visualize abstract concepts. However, the limitations cannot be avoided regarding technical issues such as marker detection failed and it needs to be further researched. Nevertheless, learning media based on augmented reality technology has great potential to be further used in educational settings.
