Abstract

This final project was a study that analyzed the message of Benoa Bay reclamation protest portrayed in Water Not War song lyric by Superman Is Dead. The objective of this study was to dig out the picture of Benoa Bay reclamation protest portrayed in Water Not War song by Superman Is Dead. The method applied in this study was descriptive qualitative method. While analyzing the data, I only focused on the textual data. By using Riffaterre’s semiotic approach, I dug out the meaning laid behind Water Not War song lyric. The first step of this research was applying heuristic reading. This stage was aimed to get the first order of semiotic system. The meaning obtained was only dictionary meanings. After finishing this stage, the next step done was hermeneutic reading. This stage was aimed to get an integrated meaning of the text. After comparing analyzing the signs from the overall lyric, the significance found was that the song talked about Benoa Bay reclamation protest. The word “protest” became the matrix of Water Not War because it reflected the whole idea of the lyric and “reclamation issue” became the hypogram because this song was a response of reclamation issue happened in Bali. In conclusion, Water Not War implicitly expresses the idea of reclamation protest through the symbols written in the lyric.
