Abstract

The use of conventional textbooks equipped with static e-books is not able to motivate students in learning. E-books like this are only limited to converting physical books into digital form. There are no artifacts that describe 21st-century learning activities. The ideal e-book needs to be designed interactively with questions to train students to think at higher levels. This study aims to measure the level of validity, readability, and effectiveness of the interactive e-book on ferns with higher-order thinking questions. This research method is Research and Development (R&D), following all Borg and Gall syntax except for dissemination (not done). Needs analysis includes syllabus analysis, lesson plan (RPP), learning resources used, and the school environment's state. The analysis results showed that students used textbooks, the breadth of the material studied was insufficient to achieve basic competence (KD), the photos/pictures of ferns in the book were colorless and did not represent the material to be studied. The identification results of ferns that grow in the lowlands, medium plains, and highlands of the Central Java region are used as a learning resource in the interactive e-book on developed ferns. The e-book product developed is then tested for its validity, legibility, and effectiveness. Product validation includes material and media validity. Material validation includes aspects of content, presentation, language, and scientific feasibility. The first stage material expert validation results obtained an average of 77.05%, and in the second stage, it increased to 84.33%. Media validation includes aspects of size graphic, cover design, and content design. The first stage media expert validation results had reached an average of 99.07%, so it was feasible to use. The development of the product readability trial was 86.22%, including the excellent criteria. E-books that are valid and have excellent readability criteria are then tested for their effectiveness on a large scale. The measured learning outcomes of students include cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Cognitive learning outcomes were seen through the average pretest and posttest scores, respectively 22.33 and 88.44. The paired sample t-test was significant between the learning outcomes before and after using the interactive e-book. The Effect size value is in the high effect category. Affective learning outcomes are assessed from cooperation in groups, tolerance, attention to material, discipline in the discussion, and responsibility. The average value of ix student activity in the attitude aspect is 3.36 from a scale of 4.0 with excellent criteria. Psychomotor learning outcomes are assessed from activity aspect of skills during discussions and practicum, which reaches 3.38 on a scale of 4.0 with excellent standards. The results of this study indicate that the interactive e-book of ferns can be a valid, practical, and useful learning resource for SMA/MA students. Improvement of e-books can be made after and according to the results of dissemination on a large scale.
