Abstract

Local potential can be used as learning source in contextual learning strategy. A learning source in the surrounding area can provide direct experience so that it will expectedly improve the students’ learning results. This research aims to analyse the diversity of plant types on Mount Tidar Magelang that can be used as a plantae learning source, the validity of “Encyclopedia of Plants on Mount Tidar Magelang”, and the effectiveness of “Encyclopedia of Plants on Mount Tidar Magelang” as a plantae learning source to improve the students’ critical thinking skill, creative thinking skill, and communication skill. The research and development method used is the R & D Borg and Gall model. The research shows that there are 48 plant types on the specified track of Mount Tidar Magelang. Those are 8 types of moss, 9 types of fern, and 31 seed plants. Based on material expert validation results, the encyclopedia is categorized as valid in the aspects of content and presentation technique; while it is very valid in language aspect. Based on media expert validation results, the encyclopedia is categorized as very valid in the graphics and language aspects. Meanwhile, the users’ review (teacher and students’ review) shows that the material, language, media presentation and novelty aspects are very valid. However, the implementation aspect of the encyclopedia is categorized as valid according to the teacher’s review; while it is categorized as very valid according to the students’ review. The use of “Encyclopedia of Plants on Mount Tidar Magelang” as a plantae learning source is effective in improving critical thinking skills in terms of basic clarification and summarizing aspects; and it is moderately effective in terms of further clarification aspect. The use of “Encyclopedia of Plants on Mount Tidar Magelang” as a plantae learning source is very good in improving students’ creativity skills in terms of curiosity aspect; while it is good in flexibility aspect, with mind-mapping and cladogram. Furthermore, the use of “Encyclopedia of Plants on Mount Tidar Magelang” as a plantae learning source is very good in improving students’ communication skills in terms of articulating thoughts and ideas effectively; while it is good in media and technology utilization aspect
