Abstract

Teacher-centered learning makes students feel less motivated to learn without the latest innovations in learning. Especially during the Covid-19 virus pandemic, which made educational institutions have to apply study from home to students and made teachers have to create innovations in learning by implementing online learning. Changes are needed in the learning process that can arouse student motivation. Motivation can affect critical thinking ability and student learning outcomes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the increase in motivation, critical thinking and student learning outcomes and to analyze the relationship between motivation and critical thinking, motivation with learning outcomes, and critical thinking with learning outcomes. This research is a quasi-experimental research with quantitative approach. The design in this study used a randomize control group pretest posttest design. Class X MIPA 1 as the experimental class was given the news based online learning model treatment, while class X MIPA 2 as the control class was only taught by online learning without being given the news based learning model. Hypothesis testing uses the T test to determine the difference between the experimental class and the control class, the N-Gain test to find out whether there is an increase after being given treatment and the correlation test to see the relationship between variables. The results of the motivation t test showed significant difference (sig. 0.01) between experimental class and control class. The critical thinking t test results showed significant difference between experimental class and control class (sig. 0.00). The t test results of learning outcomes showed significant difference between experimental class and control class (sig. 0.00). The result of N-Gain motivation in experimental class was 0.31, N-Gain result in control class was 0.12. The results of the N-Gain critical thinking ability of the experimental class were 0.67, while the N-Gain of control class was 0.33. The N-Gain result of experimental class learning outcome was 0.52 while the N-Gain result of control class was 0.38. The correlation test between motivation and learning outcomes is 0.431, the correlation between motivation and critical thinking is 0.103 and the correlation between critical thinking and learning achievement is 0.383. These results indicate that news based online learning can increase motivation, critical thinking and student learning outcomes. Students who are taught with news based online learning are more active in expressing their opinions and they are more enthusiastic in the learning process so that student motivation can affect critical thinking and student learning outcomes.
