Abstract

The scientific literacy of Indonesian students at a low level, as evidenced by the science literacy score in 2015 and 2018 which decreased from 403 to 396 with an average PISA score of 500.The low scientific literacy of students in Indonesia can be influenced by several factors, including: curriculum, use of learning models and methods applied by educators, learning facilities and teaching materials used by students. This study aims to develop STEM-oriented teaching materials and determine the effectiveness of teaching materials developed to improve scientific literacy and scientific attitudes of students. This research design uses Research and Development (R&D) with a trial design using the experimental class and the control class. Methods of data collection using questionnaires, observation and tests. Data analysis techniques include descriptive data analysis related to the validity and practicality of STEM-oriented teaching materials, while to determine the effectiveness of STEM-oriented teaching materials, a normalized N-gain test and t-test are used to see its significance. The teaching materials developed integrate the elements of science, technology, engineering engineering, and mathematics in one unified whole. This study shows the average score of validation by experts is 85.68% in the very good validation category, so that the teaching materials are suitable for use in the learning process. The effectiveness of teaching materials in improving scientific literacy and scientific attitudes of students can be seen from the N-gain score. In the experimental class, it was obtained 0.71 (high category) and 0.58 (medium category), while in the control class it was 0.50 (moderate) and 0.29 (low). Based on the results of the t-test, it was found that the increase in scientific literacy and scientific attitudes of students was higher in the experimental class than in the control class. This shows that STEM-oriented teaching materials are effective in increasing scientific literacy and scientific attitudes of students. The practicality of STEM-oriented teaching materials received a response of 82.10% with the very good category.
