Abstract

Mathematics is one of the basics for better solving problems. In fact, the mathematical communication skills of Junior High School students in Indonesia are not satisfactory. This is shown by the results of a survey of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2018. The implementation of the Discovery Learning Model using realistic approch is expected to be effective in improving the communication skills of mathematics students. This study aims to: analyze the learning quality of DL Model using realistic approach, determine the effect of AQ on the mathematical communication skills, and analyze the mathematical communication skills in terms of the AQ categories. The analysis was carried out on the mathematical communication skills before and after the implementation of DL using realistic approach. This research was conducted by a mixed method with a type of concurrent embedded strategy. The population in this study were students of class VIII E - VIII I of SMP Negeri 2 Brebes with 6 subjects taken from the experimental class, each consisting of 2 students in the Climbers, Campers, and Quitters AQ categories. Furthermore, the six research subjects were described their mathematical communication skills and conducted a comprehensive interview. The quantitative data were analyzed by normality test, homogeneity test, classical and mean completeness tests, proportional and mean difference tests, and simple linear regression test. The results showed that the learning quality of the DL model using realistic approach, including: (1) at the planning stage, the learning instruments that had been compiled were valid, (2) at the implementation stage, the implementation of learning was categorized as very good, the activeness and response of students was categorized as good, (3) at the evaluation stage, there is 1 of the 4 criterias for effective learning that is not fulfilled, namely the learning of the DL model with realistic approach that has not been completed classically. There is a positive influence between AQ on mathematical communication skills. Climbers category students have better mathematical communication skills than Campers and Quitters category students. Only students in the Quitters category did not exhibit changes in mathematical communication skills between pre and post-implementation of the DL model using realistic approach.
