Abstract

Gamalama Volcano is one of the volcanoes in Indonesia, which is located on the island of Ternate. Gamalama Volcano has a history of eruption from 1538 to 2014. The year of 1538 was the first recorded eruption, while a major eruption occurred in 1775. Gamalama Volcano has the longest eruption interval of 50 years and the shortest eruption interval of 1 year. The Gamalama volcanic eruption in December 2011 caused 2,711 people/672 families had to be evacuated due to cold lava floods that attack violently the society around the disaster-prone areas I of Gamalama Volcano, therefore the preparedness of the people in the disaster-prone areas I become important to reduce the risk of causalities and property. This study aims to determine the condition of the Gamalama Volcano eruption and the efforts that made by the community around the disaster-prone areas I. To analyze the preparedness of community in the disaster-prone area I and to find suitable preparedness for the people in the disaster-prone areas I. This research is a qualitative research with phenomenological design. Techniques of collecting data in the form of observation, interviews and documentation, the informants of this study are people in the eruption disasterprone areas I to check the validity of the data in qualitative research, the level of data confidence is used with triangulation techniques comparing the data sources obtained. The results of this study showed that the society preparedness in the disaster-prone areas I led to almost ready category seen from the results of interviews on parameters of knowledge, attitudes and early warning. Meanwhile, the parameters of emergency response plans and mobilization of human resources are still become obstacles, people in the disaster-prone areas I do not yet have readiness regarding emergency plans, who does what, and where to go during the emergency response. The availability of trained personnel in mobilizing human resources is still an obstacle. Of the nine sub-districts located in the disaster-prone areas I, there are four villages that are the most vulnerable, namely the Dufa-Dufa, Tubo, Tabam and Loto.Preparedness in accordance with communities in the disaster-prone areas I is disaster education derived from local wisdom. The condition of the Gamalama Volcanic eruption which occurs almost every year is not a reference for people in the disaster-prone areas I that already understand very well regarding preparedness steps. Suggestions from this study are for BPBD of Ternate City and related institutions in order to increase the socialization and simulation of preparedness for communities in the disaster-prone areas I.
