Abstract

Diversity looks like two sides of money. First side, it is a gift from wealth of cultural nation. On the other side, it can be a threat of disintegration. Multicultural education by opening diversity interaction could minimize the prejudice and ethnic conflict. The purposes of this research are: (1) To analyze the cultivation of multicultural values (2) To analyze the meaning of multicultural values (3) To analyze the implementation of multicultural values. Research methodology in this study is qualitative of case study approach. The informants were Chinese ethnic students, Javanese ethnic, teacher, and extracurricular trainer. Data collections used are in depth interviews, observation, and documentation study. Then, test validity used in this research was triangulation of source and triangulation of theory. Data analysis technique is qualitative data analysis of symbolic interactionism theory from Herbert Blumer. The result of the study shows that the cultivation of multicultural values was done in three domain of teaching and learning activities, they are: intra-curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular. The meaning of multicultural values between across ethnic students was done through world across ethnic friendship, religious celebration, and cultural across ethnic. Multicultural values which have been cultivated are: tolerance, solidarity, and equity. Moreover, multicultural education is effective tools to cultivate multicultural values compare with mono-cultural education. The suggestion is for the official and institution of education to not only teach about multicultural values theoretically, but also the experience by holding live activity for different ethnic and religion also visiting the worship for interfaith.
