Abstract
The Novel Anak Rantau by Ahamd Fuadi had chosen as the object of the research because in this novel there were many aspects of self-actualization that are raised in the story, especially regarding the struggle of the main character is facing the realities of life along with the twists and turns. Besides that various values of character building can be learned from reading this work. The objectives of this research were: 1) to describe and explain the self-actualization process of the main character in the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi; 2) to describe and explain the characters' of the main character's self-actualization in the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi; 3) to describe and explains the values of character building in the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi; 4) to describe and explains the relevance of the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi as an alternative to literature learning material in high school in terms of self-actualization and the value of building character. This study used a literary psychology approach. The psychological theory used was Abraham Maslow's self-actualization. This study also analyzed the values of character building. The character-building value category adheres to the concepts and guidelines for strengthening character building. The process of self-actualization main character in the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi started when he utilizing all the potential in him to fight to get back to Jakarta with the money he made himself and ended when he realized that nurturing grudges against parents was something that was not good. The characteristics of self-actualization possessed by the main character in the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi are: 1) observing reality efficiently; 2) self�acceptance and others as they are; 3) spontaneity, simplicity and reasonableness; 4) focus on the problem; 5) the need for privacy; 6) function autonomously; 7) appreciation that is always fresh; 8) social awareness/interest; 9) interpersonal relationships; 10) democratic; 11) differentiate between means and objectives; 12) creativity; 13) independence, and: 14) high experience. The character-building values contained in the main character in the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi include religious, nationalist, independent, mutual-cooperation, and integrity values. Based on the relationship with self-actualization, the value of character building, and criteria for selecting literary works in learning, the novel Anak Rantau by Ahmad Fuadi was appropriate for used as literature learning material in senior high school.
