Abstract

Riau Archipelago Malay is the origin of Indonesian. This research was motivated by the discovery of differences in phonology and lexicon in Karimun Regency, especially in Karimun District, Kundur Barat, and Moro District. Based on geographic location, Karimun Subdistrict is located at the eastern end directly adjacent to Malaysia. Next, West Kundur District is located directly adjacent to Riau Province, while Moro District is located between Kundur Island and Sugie Island. The difference in phonology and lexicon is caused by the location of the three sub-districts which are directly adjacent to other countries, other provinces, and other islands. This study aimed to: a) analyze the phonology differences of the Malay language in Karimun, Kundur Barat and Moro, b) to analyze the lexicons differences of the Malay language in Karimun, Kundur Barat and Moro, c) to analyze the different phonological distances of the Malay language in Karimun, Kundur Barat and Moro, d) analyzing the different distance between the lexicon of Malay in West Karimun Kundur and Moro, and e) analyzing the status of Malay in Karimun, Kundur Barat and Moro. This study used two approaches, namely a theoretical approach and a methodological approach. Theoretically, this study used a dialect geography approach, while methodologically this research used a qualitative descriptive approach.The data of this research are Malay words which are sourced from 6 informants at three observation points. The research instrument used 200 swadesh vocabularies which were developed into 335. The research data collection used the listening and proficient method with the proficient involved listening technique, the recording technique, and the note taking technique. The results showed that there were 34 variations of phonology, including 18 variations of vowels and 16 variations of consonant sounds; there are 182 different lexicon, including 168 lexicon experiencing onomasiological symptoms and 14 lexicon experiencing semasiological symptoms. The results of calculating different phonological distances using the dialectometric method, Karimun Malay is included in the speech difference category, while the calculationon lexicon difference distances it was found that two categories, namely the speech difference category and sub-dialects different category. Meanwhile, based on lexicostatistical calculations the Malay language used in TP-1, TP-2 and TP-3 is a group of language that fall into category of one family.
