Abstract

The writing of literary works is closely related to the figurative language that the writer uses to convey his ideas in a more beautiful and interesting way. Some of the novels that have figurative language that are interesting to study include Utomo's novels. Overall, the language used is simple. However, the novels actually contain a complete figurative language. The novels use figurative language styles that are conveyed both through the dialogue of the characters in it and through monologues. This can be used as literary teaching material in high school. Based on this explanation, the objectives of this study are: (1) analyzing the forms of figurative language in novels by S. Prasetyo Utomo; (2) describe the functions of figurative language that exist in novels by S. Prasetyo Utomo; and (3) constructing the use of the language style of S. Prasetyo Utomo's novels as an alternative teaching material in schools. The approaches used in this study include theoretical (structuralism) and methodological (descriptive analytical) approaches. The data of this research are fragments of the text of the novel Tangis Rembulan in Misty Forest, Mirror of the Soul, and Two Face Dance related to social problems and other supporting media. The data analysis of this research is to use descriptive qualitative. The results of this study indicate that there are five types of figurative language styles that dominate the three novels of Utomo which include: metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, and the synekdoke pars pro toto. The language style in the novel also has a function: (1) clarifying the concept or concretization of concepts; (2) arouse or enhance the impression of a certain atmosphere; (3) shorten speech or writing; and (4) describe the feelings of the characters. The development of the use of language style is related to the use of language style in order to reinforce the ideas that the writer wishes to convey both through interpersonal dialogue and monologues in the novel. The results of this study can add to the treasury of research related to figurative language style. In addition, this study can be used as a criterion for determining short story teaching materials in high schools so that students gain knowledge about the variety and functions of figurative language styles contained in novels.
