Abstract

The emphasis of the 2013 curriculum is high order thinking skills. However, the provision of HOTS questions in mathematics books still has low percentages. Based on the survey results of TIMSS, one of the influential factors of more inadequate scientific thinking skills of Indonesia's learners was having less training to complete HOTS questions. On the other hand, the test's design had the purpose to train learners’ HOTS is not available. The teacher skills to develop HOTS test assessments are also low. This research aims to create a valid HOTS test assessment with excellent characteristics for seventh graders in learning mathematics. The current developed assessment was analyzed in terms of its internal validity by using Aiken. The reliability was examined by using Ebel. The analysis was done using a Model to find out the external validity, levels of difficulties, information function, measurement, and estimated parameters of the skills. This research used a research and development study, as proposed by Djemari Mardapi (2016). It was then modified into 11 stages by adding the analysis of the necessity and one to one test. Three experts reviewed the test assessment. Ten respondents followed the one to one test. On the other hand, thirty-nine respondents followed the trial run test. Then, the test was followed by 135 respondents. The data collections were done by interview technique, questionnaire, and test question provision. Thus, the analyzed data were qualitative and quantitative. The HOTS test assessment development for the learners resulted in essaytyped mathematics questions. The internal validity had each score ≥ 0,67. It showed that the test was reliable to apply to measure the HOTS of the learners in learning mathematics in seventh grade. The inter-rater reliability had a score of 0.9. It showed that the experts agreed that the developed assessment could be trusted to measure the learners’ HOTS. The one to one test of 10 question items showed the assessment readability with a percentage of 87%. By considering the time allotment, then 8 question items were tested in the trial run stage. The analysis used the Rasch model on the trial run test data and test.
