Abstract

Academic dishonesty is a violation of the code of ethics in the academic sphere, which manifests in the form of cheating, plagiarism, lying, buying answers, cheating, and committing other violations. Referring to previous spiritual�religious findings, moral disengagement has an effect on individual involvement in academic dishonesty. The objectives of this study: 1) identify the relationship between religious attitude and academic dishonesty among students, 2) identify the relationship between moral disengagement and academic dishonesty among students, 3) identify the relationship between religious attitude and moral disengagement among students, and 4) identify the indirect relationship between religious attitude and academic dishonesty through moral disengagement among students. The study population consisted of guidance and counseling students in Semarang City totaling 1,759 students from four universities, namely PGRI Semarang University, IVET Semarang University, Semarang State University, and Walisongo State University Semarang. The research sample was 292. Quantitative research methods, explanatory correlational research types, data analysis techniques using regression-based path-analytic frameworks, to test the mediation effect used the process of Hayes (2013). The research was conducted by distributing the research scale via google form to the research sample online. Research results show; 1) there is a significant relationship between spiritual�religious and academic dishonesty among students; 2) there is a significant relationship between religious attitude and moral disengagement among students; 3) there is a significant relationship between moral disengagement and academic dishonesty among students; and 4) there is no indirect effect between religious attitude and academic dishonesty through moral disengagement among students. Dishonesty to individuals can be through individual religious attitude enhancement. Suggestions for future researchers are to integrate other variables to investigate the role of moral disengagement in mediating the relationship between religious attitude and academic dishonesty.
