Abstract

The use of online games in adolescents has increased drastically and there is a potential for a tendency to addiction to online games which results in personal and social problems. This study aims to identify the effects of motivational interviewing counseling intervention to increase self-esteem and self-control in students with a tendency to online game addiction. This study used a randomized pretest posttest control group design involving 12 students of SMA Negeri 8 Semarang. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling with the criteria of low self-esteem, low self-control and a high tendency for online game addiction. Data collection used the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Self-Control Scale and Game Online Addiction Scale (GAS). The data analysis method used the mixed repeated measure ANOVA test. ANOVA test results showed that motivational interviewing counseling was effective in increasing self-esteem (F (2.20) = 184,277, p <0.05) and students' selfcontrol (F (2.20) = 51.168, p <0.05). These findings confirm that motivational interviewing is effective in increasing self-esteem and self-control of students with a tendency to online game addiction. Based on this study, there are findings that can be implicated by counselors or guidance and counseling teachers when they want to deal with problems related to self-esteem and low self-control in students with a tendency to addiction to online games. They can use the motivational interviewing concept. For future researchers to be able to carry out the same research but in a different form of service and the need for more subjects and in analyzing gender and age differences in subsequent research subjects
