Abstract

In general, the problem that is often encountered in the field is found of an untested problem solving ability assessment instrument. The aimed of this research and development is to produce a proven problem-solving ability instrument. This research used eight stages of development which include (1) Preliminary study; (2) Planning; (3) Product draft development; (4) Initial product testing; (5) Initial product completion; (6) Wide-scale trials; (7) Completion of products from field trials; (8) Completion of final products. The results of this study were items of mathematical solving ability on story questions in the form of essays which were equipped with discussion and scoring guidelines. The content validity test using the Aiken's V formula is resulted in the value of all items above 0.3 which means that all aspects assessed by the experts were valid. The raw variance value in the construct validity analysis of the Rasch model was 59.2%. The unexplained variance values of less than 10% were 8.2; 6.6; 6.3; 5.7; 5.3, respectively, meaning that the unidimensionality of the instrument was in good category. Supported by CFA test. In this case, the goodness of fit criteria which has been determined the probability value of the goodness of fit test shows the value of GFI = 0.97; AGFI = 0.92; CFI = 1.00; and NFI = 0.98. the measurement model fit is fulfilled, as evidenced by the value of the factor loading for each item, which shows a value> 0.3, meaning that the variable is said to have good validity towards the construct. The increase in the reliability value also occurred at each step of the reliability test, there were 0.516; 0.566 and 0.89. The test items were also analyzed using the Rasch model by revealing the interpretation in terms of items, persons, and instruments. The profile of students' mathematical problem solving abilities was categorized as very high as many as 14.4% of students, as many as 45.6% of students in the high category, as many as 21.6% of students in the low category, and 18.4% of students in the very low category. The conclusion of the instrument for assessing the problem-solving ability of the seventh grade story questions on flat shape material fulfils the number of criteria set so that it is feasible to use
