Abstract

The background of this research is the low competence of scientific literacy, the attitude of curiosity and student responsibility, and the less optimal learning model used by teachers in online learning in elementary schools. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the online guided discovery model to improve the competence of scientific literacy, curiosity and responsibility of elementary school students. The method used in this study is an experimental method with a pretestposttest one group design. The research sample was Grade V students in the 2019/2020 academic year from three schools in Kudus Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The three schools were determined as an experimental class treated with the online guided discovery model. Data were collected using test sheets and observation sheets. Data of students’ scientific literacy competence were analyzed quantitatively using parametric statistics which included normality test, homogeneity test, one way ANOVA test, paired sample t-test, and N-gain test. Data of students’ curiosity and responsibility attitudes were analyzed quantitatively using the normality test. Because the data were not normally distributed, further analysis used nonparametric statistics which included the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Wilcoxon test, and the N-gain test. The results showed that: (1) Online guided discovery model learning was effective in improving students' scientific literacy competence. The N-gain test of three elementary schools respectively obtained <g> of 0.59 (moderate), 0.74 (high), and 0.73 (high); (2) Online guided discovery model learning is effective in improving students' curiosity attitudes. The N-gain test of three elementary schools obtained <g> of 0.59 (moderate), 0.69 (moderate), and 0.63 (moderate); (3) Online guided discovery model learning is effective in improving students’ responsibility attitudes. The N-gain test of three elementary schools obtained <g> of 0.81 (high), 0.71 (high), and 0.66 (moderate). It can be concluded that the onlinebased guided discovery model is effective in improving scientific literacy competence, curiosity and responsibility of elementary school students.
