Abstract

Mathematics communication skill is an essential skill for 21st -century learners. However, based on the observation results on the fifth graders of elementary school, these skills were still low. It was due to the learning implementation was still inaccurate, so learners did not have optimal mathematics communication skills. Thus, applying Problem-Based Learning and Teams Game Tournament functioned as the alternative to improving learners’ mathematics communication skills. This research is a qualitative study with a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of the fifth graders of a Primary School in Jatinangor. The school has applied the 2013 curriculum. The data were collected by interview, observation sheet, and attitude scale. The findings showed that: (1) both models significantly influenced to improve the learners’ mathematics communication. However, the problem-based learning had a significant influence with the higher average test result, 70.23, than the Teams Game Tournament with an average test result, 65.30; (2) the improved indicators of mathematics communication skills of both models were such as grammatical with a percentage of 63%, understanding interview with 58%, sociolinguistics 43%, and strategic competence with 73%; (3) the positive attitudes found in the second model obtained an average percentage of 82.11% as the supporting evidence of the obtained learning outcomes. From the findings, both models, especially problem-based learning, could be used by practitioners to improve the mathematics communication skills of the fifth graders of Primary Schools. However, the implementation should consider the characteristics of each given model
