Abstract

Critical thinking skills and communication skills have an important role in the success of a science lesson. Through abilities and skills, teachers can measure how much students can understand the material that has been taught after learning activities. Therefore, it is necessary to support a learning model that can help students improve their critical thinking skills and communication skills. One of the learning models is STEM-based Project Based Learning. This study aims to (1) analyze the effectiveness of STEM-based Project Based Learning learning in improving critical thinking skills (2) to analyze the effectiveness of STEM-based Project Based Learning learning in improving student communication skills (3) to describe the profile of critical thinking skills in Project Based Learning-based learning. STEM (4) describes the profile of students' communication skills in STEM-based Project Based Learning. This research is a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design. Data collection was carried out through (1) collecting quantitative data with a test of students' critical thinking skills and student communication skills questionnaires (2) collecting qualitative data by observation, interviews, and documentation. The technique of taking quantitative research subjects with purposive sampling and qualitative 6 students. The results showed that STEM-based Project Based Learning was effective, because at the assessment stage with a minimum criterion of 75, it was obtained that the average critical thinking ability exceeded the minimum criteria, the proportion of classical completeness was more than 75%, the average class with Project Based Learning based learning. STEM is better than the class before STEM�based Project Based Learning. And there is an increase in critical thinking skills and higher communication skills in STEM-based Project Based Learning. Thus, effective learning is obtained. Then 6 students were analyzed using high, medium, and low categories of critical thinking skills and communication skills, so that they could achieve all indicators well
