Abstract

Characters are values possessed by an individual that can be influenced by several factors. One factor that can influence a child's character is parenting. The quality of parenting itself is influenced by the education level of parents. In addition, the existence of peers also has an important role in building a character. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of peers and parenting viewed from the educational level of the parents. The samples of this study were 169 people. They were parents of the students of RA Sudirman I, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, and RA Al Hidayah. The sampling technique used was cluster proportional stratified random sampling. The scores for character and peers were obtained through observations done by parents. The scores for parenting were obtained through questionnaires filled out by parents, both father and mother. The data analysis used was regression analysis with the help of SPSS 20.0 for windows. The results showed that peers and parenting have a significant effect on early childhood character. The contribution of the peers variable on early childhood character is 54.2% with r value by .737 and p value <5%. The influence of parenting variables on early childhood character is 62.6% with r value by .791 and p value <5%. The influence of parenting on early childhood character occurs in the group of parents with middle education level and groups of parents with higher education level. Meanwhile, in the group of parents with lower education, there is no influence of parenting on early childhood character. This is because the parenting at the lower education level is in the low category. Therefore, parents can apply parenting by implementing good control, behavior, communication, and affection in developing early childhood character. Parents and teachers need to involve children in peer activities and encourage them to participate in activities done by their peers
