Abstract

The use of Slang is popular nowadays. As a non-standard expression, Slang directed from a community with many informal words and phrases that characterize a trend or social identity inside a group. This study provided analysis about word formation found of Slang found in a movie script. The objectives of this study were to classify the types of word formation used and found how the slang formed. The data were taken from a script of a movie titled “Chef”. The descriptive qualitative approach was applied in this study. The results of this study showed that there were 72 slang terms found in the “Chef” movie script. From the total data, 11 kinds of word formation process out of 13 types of English formation were identified. They were 21 compounding (29,1%), 16 clipping (22,2%), 14 borrowing (19,4%), followed by 6 acronym (8,3%), and 5 inflection (6,9%). In the next place, four types of word formation had the same amount of data and percentage, namely; coinage, blending, conversion, and derivation, each of them consisted of 2 data (2,7%). Then, followed by multiple process and onomatopoeia with 1 data (1,3%) as the lowest number of percentages. There were two types of word formation where could not be found in the movie script, backformation and reduplication. Based on the findings, the researcher found that compounding became a word formation process that most frequent in the movie script with 21 data (29,1%).
