Abstract

Postcolonialism is study and analysis of European territorial conquests that is used for a literary analysis concerning literary works set in formerly colonized countries. Nervous Conditions is a novel written by a woman from third world country. This novel portrays postcolonial issue and focuses on the story of the Shona family during the postcolonial era in the 1960s. Since Rhodesia was a former British colony, the legacy of colonialism and its influence is not that easy to go away. Hence, those who were colonised, especially the women, experience many problems to cope up with. Women are considered as second�class citizens and the ones who more likely got unfair treatment. The research aims to examine the postcolonial issues in the novel dealing with double colonization. The objectives of the study were to describe and explain how the novel builds the themes related to postcolonialism and how the women living in patriarchy experienced oppression from both male as well as colonial power. The study was done qualitatively by using content analysis method. The data were analysed by using Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism. It was done by categorizing qualitative textual data into clusters of similar entities, or conceptual categories to derive the meaning both explicitly and implicitly that is stated in the content of the story. The findings of the study showed that the legacy of colonialism and its influence remained in Rhodesia even after its independence. Also, the story highlighted the themes of patriarchy and cultural contestation which affect the life of the female characters. Then, the findings explained how the female characters were oppressed traditionally and colonially. Therefore, it showed how women were doubly colonized by the males and Western domination so that they were unable to get full freedom or authority since they were trapped and fighting between both.
