Abstract

This study analyzed semiotics in Veronica Roth’s Divergent. Divergent novel consists of several semiotics aspect that is interesting to be examined in depth. Semiotics is a science of signs and their meanings. Fundamentally, it concerns how people communicate and make sense of each other using verbal and nonverbal signs. In Divergent, each faction have their signs and attributes such as their clothes colour, their house, and also the faction sign. In this study, the writer wants to discuss about what these sign and attributes can reflect a sign of their social identity based on their faction. This study aimed to describe how semiotics aspect that appears in the novel especially in faction sign and attributes. This descriptive�qualitative study described how factions sign and attributes reflected their social identity and also how their roles made social balance in their society as reflected in Divergent novel. The data in this study were taken from the object of the study, Veronica Roth’s Divergent by reading thoroughly, identifying, interpreting and reporting. In analyzing the data, I used the semiotics approach by Roland Barthes (1991). Then, the method of data analysis is based on literal meaning and also cultural and myth meaning in the society. Ultimately, the final finding was concluded by connecting the signifiers, signified and myth in the society. The results indicated that first, factions signs and attributes described in each of literal meaning then connect it with the historical background and myth that exists in the society. It is found that pair of hands as the Abnegation faction symbol means selfless and grey colour in all of their attributes represented kind and consevative. Then, the fire as the Dauntless faction sign signified brave and unyielding and their black atrributes implied their power and authority. Meanwhile, the eye as the Erudite faction sign means intelligent and their blue attributes implied their visionary. On the other hand, a scale as the Candor faction sign means justice and their withe-black attributes implied their purity and honesty. Lastly, the tree as the Amity faction sign means wisdom while their red-yellow attributes implied their peace. From the explanation and analysis that the writer did, it can be concluded what sign of each sign and each factions’ attributes that reflected their social identity. Second, each faction has their roles in the society such as Abnegation job as the government staff, Dauntless member as the guard of their country, Erudite faction member as the scientists, Candor member as the judge and Amity faction member as the food producer. Their each role or job made the embodiment of social balance and spared of any conflict between factions.
