Abstract

This research focused on idiomatic expressions found in Scanlon, Gerson & Baird's "Monster University" movie screenplay. The objectives of the study are: (1) to analyze the strategies used in the subtitling of idioms from English to Indonesian in Monster University movie based on Baker's Theory (1992), and (2) to determine the accuracy of idiom subtitling based on Nababan (2012). The data was taken from collecting the idioms found in the screenplay and their Indonesian subtitles. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from the content analysis and the questionnaires answered by 20 respondents. The result of this study confirmed that four strategies were applied to subtitle idioms in this movie, using similar meaning and form (20.83%), using similar meaning but dissimilar form (32.41%), paraphrase (46.23%), and omission (1.85%). Based on the result of this study, it was shown that the most common strategy used in subtitling idioms in this movie was to use the paraphrase strategy. As a result of the accuracy assessment conducted by 20 respondents, 89.95% of idiom subtitles were categorized accurately, 8.40% were categorized less accurately, and 1.92% were categorized inaccurately. From these data, the writer can conclude that idiom subtitles in Monster University movies are categorized as accurate translations.
