Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the techniques used in translating the idioms in Doyle‘s A Study in Scarlet, and to show the resulted readability of the Indonesian translated idioms. Descriptive approach was used in conducting the research. The classification of translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) was used to identify the techniques in translating the idioms and the readability rating scale as used by Nababan (2012) was also used here to evaluate the readability of the translated idioms. Fifteen respondents were involved in the evaluation of the readability. The findings show that there were nine techniques used in translating the idioms, with established equivalent being the most dominant (45.06%), followed by linguistic compression (19.37%), adaptation (13.04%), literal translation (8.30%), modulation (5.93%), discursive creation (3.95%), reduction (1.98%), linguistic amplification (1.58%), and transposition (0.79%). The readability rating done by the respondents showed that a big portion of the translated idioms is considered readable, with 78.62% of being rated as readable, 13.02% not quite readable, and 8.36% unreadable.
