Abstract

While being responsible is normally a good thing, being responsible in wrong places could create regretful and unfortunate situations. This study is aimed to reveal how responsibility affect alienation and to describe its consequences. The topic of this study is alienation as a consequence of responsibility in Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Observation sheets are used as the research instrument, while the data collection is based on library research. This is a descriptive qualitative research that uses structuralism theory and is supported by the Marx’s theory of alienation and philosophical aspect of responsibility to understand how responsibility could result in Alienation and to explain its consequences. This research results in several findings as follows: 1) By being responsible Gregor is suffering from deep alienation from all the aspects of alienation. Moreover, the rest of Gregor’s family experiences alienation by being irresponsible. 2) The Samsa household was forced to abandon its main provider because he was no longer able, and the rest of the household embrace the live as a worker which could possibly lead to their upcoming alienation.
