Abstract

This research discusses the translation method used to the interrogative direct speeches in the Indonesian version of the novel 1984 by George Orwell and degree of equivalence of those translations. This research aims to identify the methods used to translate the closed interrogative direct speeches in the novel from English into Indonesian and analyze the resulted equivalence of the translation. The translation methods discussed in this research is the one proposed by Nida, and the translation’s degree of equivalence will be analyzed based on the theory proposed by Bell. This is descriptive qualitative research, using the interrogative direct speeches collected from the Novel 1984 by George Orwell, comparing both the English and Indonesian version. Those data are identified according to the methods used and the degree of equivalence. Finally, this study will discuss the impact of the translation methods used to the degree of equivalence of the translation. As the results researcher found that the translator used three main types of translation adjustment methods proposed by Nida which are additions, subtraction, and alteration. For the degree of equivalence, it is found that most 88.88% of the translation is fully equivalent. As the connection between the translation method used and the degree of equivalence, it is found that the translation that is not adjusted, mostly already fully equivalent.
