Abstract

This final project is a study which conducted with the objective of finding the translation techniques used by the translator in the English-Indonesian Translation of Totto-chan The Little Girl At The Window. The focus of this study would the dialogue translation of The Main Character. The writer used the descriptive qualitative approach while applying the translation techniques proposed by (Molina & Albir(2002). The data of this study are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in the form of utterances in the dialogue of the novel. The result shows that, out of 308 main character’s dialogue sentence, there are 13 translation techniques. Those techniques were Literal Translation(33.76%),Established Equivalence(14.28%), Particularization (10.38%), Adaptation(7.14%), Linguistic amplification(6.16%), Borrowing (5.84%), Generalization(5.84%), Calque(4.54%), Linguistic Compression(3.24%), Discursive Creation(3.24%), Reduction(2.92%),Transposition(2.27%), Modulation (0.32%). It can be concluded that the most used technique is Literal Translation which means most of the main character’s dialogue sentences in Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window were translated word by word.
