Abstract

The poem is a part of literature. It develops dynamically and one of its function is to deliver what the author thinks about a term. Further, the poem is using the sign. This study analyzed the function of nature as a symbol of God existences in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s poem translated by John McGlynn entitled In My Prayer. The study was aimed at explaining the use of nature as a sign of God existences. This is qualitative research and employed a qualitative approach which applied semiotic theory as the core. The investigation of the research resulted in several findings. first, in the poem natural symbols such as natural phenomenon and its elements are used through the word, phrase, and sentences. Second, the natural symbols are used by the author to describe his feeling about God existence through the natural phenomenon and its element. Third, further investigation found that nature is the most used sign used in the poem by Sapardi Djoko Damono that translated by John McGlynn. This term is the way how the poem emphasizes God existences by its natural signs. The natural symbol is used in the poem to create a visualization for the reader by reading the poem and nature is the most suitable signs to describe God existence. To conclude, it can be said that Nature is an effective tool to symbolized God existences.
