Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the kinds of metaphysical symbols represent joy and sorrow as reflected in I Heard The Owl Call My Name Written by Margaret Craven. This study used semiotic theory by Roland Barthes (1990) using map of sign functioning table. This research was using qualitative to describe the result of the study. This study used primary and secondary data. The primary data were taken from novel The Owl Call My Name Written by Margaret Craven. The secondary data source was from books, journals, articles, and the internet. The data of the study were taken in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and utterances related to the study. The data were collected by reading the novel thoroughly, identifying, and reporting. The study found that metaphysical symbols represent joy and sorrow as reflected such as Mark Brian, Potlach, hamatsa, salmon and the owl. Mark Brian represented both joy and sorrow. He is a white man who is strange and may bring harms but on the other hand has power to help Gordon to pursue a better life through education. In rhyme with previous symbol, Potlach also represented both joy and sorrow since it is a ceremony symbolized birth, adoption, marriage and also death. Another ceremony found as symbol is hamatsa. Hamatsa represented joy of entering adulthood. Salmon also represented joy as it is signifier of the living of Kwakiutl people. Meanwhile, the sorrow is represented by the owl; the owl here is signifier of death.
