Abstract

Mood is one of aethetic element that rarely to be discussed in a research. Mood is the result of reader comprehension trough Author’s word choice as a result to get the feel of the story while reading a literary work. This research is conducted to discover mood in the novel about geisha’s life. The topic of this research in mood in Arthur Golden’s The Memoirs of A Geisha. The research instrument uses observation sheets, while the data is based on library research. This research is a qualitative research that used Dynamic Structuralism Theory by Jan Mukarovsky and Felix Vodicka. By using Dynamic Structuralism Theory, the analysis is conducted through semiotic approach found in the novel. This research results in severals finding as follows: 1) There are twenty four moods found in the novel and mostly are dark vibes. 2) The mood found in several elements that author described such as in setting, imagery, dialogue, and diction. 3) The images of geisha in the novel “The Memoirs of A Geisha” have several similarities towards Mineko Iwasaki’s fact and Gishas’s fact in general.
