Abstract

This study analyzes the derivational and inflectional words in The Star-Child short story by Oscar Wilde. This study aims to find out whether the process of affixation changes the meaning of the root words and to determine the types of derivational nouns and adjectives in the short story. This study uses qualitative and quantitative. The data was collected from The Star-Child short story which is divided into derived and inflected words. The data was analyzed according to the affixation process using the theory of Katamba (1993) and Szymanek (1989). The researcher found 78 derivational words which consist of derived nouns (41%), derived adjectives (16.7%) and derived adverbs (42.3%) with 16 suffixes and 561 inflectional words in total which consist of inflected nouns (28.5%), inflected adjectives (1.6%) and inflected verbs (69.9%) with 8 suffixes. The conclusion showed the word formation mostly change the class of root words but in certain cases it does not occur any change in the process of affixation. The process of affixation always affects the meaning of derived words, meanwhile it does not really affect the meaning of inflected words. The change occurs when root words are being added by suffixes. According to the data, the derived adjectives found are divided into 4 types, the one which frequently appeared is possessional adjectives. Meanwhile the derived nouns found are divided into 3 types, which the dominant one in the short story is nomina essendi.
