Abstract

The hospitality and tourism industry is growing rapidly in this era; this makes hotels very competitive, especially to attract tourists to choose their hotels. Communication skills, especially in English, are one of the most important things in the hospitality industry. However, there are still many hoteliers who have difficulty communicating in English. Therefore, researchers conducted English communication skills training for hotel trainees. Researchers used English Specific Purposes (ESP) material because ESP can meet the needs of English according to its field. The training was held four times at Hotel Bougenville, Magelang, which is close to the wonders of the world, namely Borobudur Temple. After the training, questionnaires were distributed to the trainees to find out their responses to the training. The purpose of this study is how much ESP can develop the English communication skills of hotel training participants and participants' responses after the training. The method used was a quasi-experimental design type one group pretest-posttest. The pre-test and post-test results were calculated using the Wilcoxon SPSS signed-rank test. The results of the statistical test table Sig. is 0.018. Because of Sig. <0.05, then H0 is rejected. It means that there is an increase in employee communication skills after being trained using ESP material. From the questionnaires distributed to measure participants' responses, they felt that this training was beneficial and hoped that it could be held again.
