Abstract

This research investigated the types of code mixing and code switching used by Cinta Laura Kiehl in her vlogs. The vlogs contained her daily activities or collaborations with other public figures. This research was purposed to investigate the types of code mixing and code switching used by Cinta Laura Kiehl in her vlogs and to investigate why she used them based on Hoffman (1992). This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The object of the study in this final project was Cinta Laura Kiehl’s utterance. In February 2020, Cinta Laura Kiehl posted six vlogs and those vlogs were analyzed in the research. The research data were the transcript of six vlogs and each transcript was analyzed by using table of the types of code mixing and code switching. There were three results of this study. First, all types of code mixing, i.e. insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization were implemented in her vlogs. She used insertion type frequently in 75.1%. In contrast, the alternation and congruent types were used infrequently. It is proved by the percentage of them are 16.4% and 8.5%. Second, for code switching type, the inter-sentential switching was used frequently and proved by the percentage of this type in 58.8%. Cinta often used intra-sentential switching in 38.8%. For the emblematic type, it was used infrequently in 2.4%. Third, the reasons referred to Hoffman (1992) why a bilingual person uses code mixing and code switching are talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, showing empathy, interjection, repetition, intention, and expressing group identity. The writer found that those reasons were implemented by Cinta Laura Kiehl in her vlogs. Based on the explanation above, the writer concluded that Cinta Laura Kiehl implemented code mixing and code switching frequently with comprehensive structure. However, between inter-sentential and intra-sentential code switching were considered to bring an ambiguity because they happened according to Cinta Laura Kiehl’s intonation.
