Abstract

This research focuses on the strategies used by the subtitler in subtitling Iglesias’ stand-up comedy “Visiting Saudi Arabia and the Middle East” into Indonesian and the resulted accuracy of the subtitles. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study aims to analyze the subtitling strategies used by the subtitler, the accuracy level resulted, and the relationship between the strategies used and the resulted accuracy of the Indonesian subtitles of the stand-up comedy. The classification of translation strategies proposed by Gottlieb was used in analyzing the strategies used, and Nababan’s translation accuracy scale was used to analyze the accuracy level. Three respondents have been involved in rating the accuracy, those who master English and Indonesian languages. The results of the study were obtained from 474 data which showed that there were 8 strategies used by the subtitler in subtitling the comedy. The most dominant strategy used was a paraphrase, followed by transfer, condensation, deletion, imitation, decimation, resignation, and expansion. Then, the accuracy level resulted were obtained from 1404 data which showed that 89.46% of the subtitles were categorized as accurate, 9.47% less accurate, and 1.07% inaccurate. The relationship shows that the strategy with the highest accurate result was a transfer (96.88%), while the highest less accurate result was decimation (19.05%), and expansion (6.67%) was the highest inaccurate result. In conclusion, the strategies used by the subtitler in this study were mostly accurate.
