Abstract

The Indonesian government would like to enhance a Mental Revolution through our educational system by developing a curriculum and involving some character education values in a textbook. Therefore, this study aims to analyze and discover what character education values are embodied or represented in an EFL textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris Revised Edition 2017 for Eleventh Grade of Senior High School and know how those characters were manifested in its. The study employs a qualitative approach, particularly content analysis. The finding points out that: First, in 15 chapters of this textbook already involved complete values. There are religiosity, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creativity, independence, democracy, curiosity, nationalism, patriotism, appreciation of achievement, friendship, love of peace, reading interest, environmental awareness, social awareness, and responsibility. Those characters are integrated into teaching material in the written text, such as dialogues, assignments, tasks, and reading texts. Here, reading interest, responsibility, curiosity, creativity, and social awareness are frequently popped up values here. Meanwhile, democracy, nationalism, patriotism, and discipline are needed values that have to be promoted since these characters are being concerned as the goal of Mental Revolution that is being good citizenship. The second finding is how character education values are presented in the textbook, consisting of two ways. The dominant technique is implicit which is used to present reading interest, and curiousity. Meanwhile the rest is explicit that is used to present a hardwork value. The study showed three character values that are not stated in curriculum 2013: collaboration, critical thinking, and politeness. Therefore, it becomes the novelty of this research. The pedagogical implication of the research are textbook should be continuously updated by analyzed its context, especially for its character education values, and for teachers can help the students think, understand, and accept a positive judgment of the value in order to improve their character better through teaching and to learn progress using a newest, compact and examined textbook.
