Abstract

This final project reports on a study aimed to find out whether Simon Says game can be used as strategy in teaching vocabulary and to find out whether the use of Simon Says game is effective in teaching vocabulary. This was a quantitative study that used quasi-experimental research as a research design. The population was the seventh graders of SMP Negeri 24 Semarang in the academic year of 2020/2021. Two groups were chosen as the samples of this study, VII F as the control group was taught by using the conventional method or Grammar Translation Method, whereas VII G as the experimental group was taught by using Simon Says game. The results showed that Simon Says game helps students enhance their vocabulary mastery since the experimental group gained a higher score than the control group. In the pre-test, the average score of the experimental group was 67.76 and the control group was 66.12. In the post-test, the average score of the experimental group was 83.94 and the control group was 78.03. In order to investigate the significant differences between the control and experimental group, the data were analyzed by paired sample t-test. Both groups obtained sig (2-tailed) value 0.000, with α = 5% = 0.05. Because the sig (2-tailed) value is less than 0.05, it means that there was a significant difference result between the control and experimental group. Thus, it can be concluded that Simon Says game can be used as an alternative activity in teaching vocabulary.
